Social Intelligence: Clinical Applications of Social Neuroscience  for Addressing Clients’ Interpersonal Problems

Presenter: Valerie E. Stone, Ph.D.

Course description

Social intelligence is a conscious and unconscious survival skill that allows us to track social interactions around us and to interact with others effectively. Research shows that social intelligence is essential for good functioning and well-being. Many aspects of sociality date back millions of years and are shared with other primates. Recently, biologists and neuroscientists have gained unique insights into social intelligence and the brain. Theory and research in these fields has allowed social neuroscientists to delineate the components of social intelligence (e.g., theory of mind, empathy, conversational pragmatics, reciprocity and ethics, attachment, tracking eye gaze, interpretation of nonverbal behavior, hierarchy negotiation), to illuminate how each may have evolved in the human lineage, and to detail the brain systems that underlie social capacities. The program focuses on how to apply knowledge about social intelligence to work with clients and their interpersonal problems. This course also covers research on how the brain systems underlying social intelligence can be impaired by brain injury or developmental disorders, such as autism. Clinicians will learn new ways to assess social skills and evidence-based methods for social skill rehabilitation.

Purpose/Goal

The purpose of this program is to bring clinicians up to date on the most current empirical findings in social neuroscience, including research on the brain basis of theory of mind, attachment, and interpersonal ethics. It reviews recent research coming out of evolutionary studies and social neuroscience in order to show how these apply to evidence-based clinical practice.
